Zagreb Film Festival’s new section, Inspired by True Events, features a film that critics proclaimed one of the discoveries of this year’s Berlin International Film Festival and its authors exciting new talents in the world of filmmaking. In Bloom will be screened tonight, at 9PM, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb. 

In Bloom is a debut picture by the filmmaking duo Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross, who testify of a new rise of Georgian cinema and a new generation of directors ‘emerged’ from the suffering and isolation of the Georgian past. The film has so far won a dozen awards, including C.I.C.A.E. Award at the Berlinale and Hearts of Sarajevo for best film and best female roles (actresses Liki Babluani and Mariam Bokeria).

In Bloom is a powerful tale of two girls in their early twenties in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, a country that just gained independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. While life for them is only beginning, the country is facing violence, war on the Black Sea coast (in Abkhazia) and the phenomenon of personal revenge in the name of justice that spread across the society like a plague.

In Bloom is both an intimate drama of two young women whose social class differences destined them for different things, and a portrayal of a country at a fascinating moment of its history.
